Idaho Falls Horse Racing returns with 10 big days of hoof pounding, heart pounding, horse racing action!

John Deere Bonus Challenge - 3 & older, high earners preferred. July 25th, $5,000 added, $8,000 EST. Will be consolation if over 18 horses are entered. 400 yards. $100 to nominate due in-hand on July 20th, $200 due @ time of entry.

The Intermountain Stallion Futurity - Trials July 31st. Finals August 22nd. The Intermountain Stallion Derby - Trials July 31st. Finals August 21st. Limited to stallions standing for $1,000 or less in Idaho or any state that borders Idaho.

Sandy Downs Maiden Frolic - Trials July 31st. Finals August 22nd. $2,000 added. $100 nomination due July 22nd. $100 due @ entry. For maidens as of June 1, 2009.

Intermountain Horse Racing.com O-Night Futurity - Held August 22nd. High money earners. $2,000 added. $50 to nominate due August 1st. $200 due @ time of entry. Limited to sires on website.

Von Adams Memorial Thoroughbred Claiming Stakes - $6,000 added. For 3 & older that have started for a claiming price of $2,500 or less in 2009. $250 due no later than 10am August 25th with the trials run on August 29th. Finals September 20th. Horses will be eligible to be claimed for $2,500 during the trials and eligible to be claimed for $3,200 in the finals.

Bosen Futurity - $15,000 added. Bosen Derby - $5,000 added. Both races are for Bosen eligible horses. Trials for both on September 5th. Finals September 19th.

The Idaho Falls Mile - Sponsored by Coeur d'Alene casino. $2,000 added. 3 & older. September 20th. High earners preferred

The Hawthorne Futurity - $10,000 added. Open Fut. Trials September 5th. Finals September 20th. First payment due July 10th.

Idaho Cup Thoroughbred Races - Held Sept 19; Entry day on Tuesday, Sept 15. Phone 208-529-0671. Juvenile Race will not have trials, but the purse will be divided into divisions. The Idaho Quarter Horse Association has chosen not to hold their Idaho Cup at Sandy Downs, anyone who calls concerning quarter horses for the Idaho Cup needs to contact IQHA Vice-President of Racing, Clayton Russell at 208-365-5560.

RECAP OF 2008 RACE MEET

Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing returned to Sandy Downs Race Track in Idaho Falls for six race days - September 13 & 14, 20 & 21, and 27 & 28 - conducted under the banner of Capitol Racing, the racing association that has conducted live racing at Les Bois Park in Boise.

Opening weekend featured Trials of the Bosen Livestock Futurity, the Bosen Livestock Derby, the Idaho Falls Quarter Horse Futurity, the Von Adams Memorial Claiming Stakes and the new Intermountain Stallion Futurity. Trial winners for the Bosen Futurity included Gm Lucky Dasher, Star a Fight Fever, It's a Striker and Babes Gray Gal. The Bosen Derby Trials were won by Heza Distant Rockey and Jetten With Kelly. Winners of the Idaho Falls Futurity were Wm Virus Detected, Stormin Leader and Streakin Cherry Cola. Towering Prince, Scott's Poppy and Classic Honor were victorious in Trials of the Von Adams Memorial. Finally, Trials of the inaugural Intermountain Stallion Futurity were won by The Black Perry and Bold Badon. The handle on opening Saturday was $31,197 and racing on both weekend days was held under warm and sunny skies.

The middle weekend of the race meet featured the Kevin Vanderwoude Memorial, the Rod & Barbara Grant Memorial, the Sandy Downs Paint & Appaloosa Futurity, and the Sandy Downs Spots & Dots Stakes. The Vanderwoude Memorial was won by Smart Dawn (trained by Mike Taylor for owners Wendy and Ray Norgaard, Jr.), while the Grant Memorial was won by Runbyu (trained by Mike Scudder for Dennis & Gerri Cain). The Paint & Appaloosa Futurity and Spots & Dots Stakes were won by Kories Silk (trained by Tim Holdaway for Robert Mozinger) and Tisa Arrow C (trained by Robert Smith for Andy & Mary Atkinson), respectively. Thundershowers throughout the afternoon on Saturday produced a track that was rated "muddy" after race #3; dry but colder and windy weather greeted patrons, horsemen and their horses on Sunday afternoon.

Sunshine and warmer temperatures returned for both the Saturday and Sunday of closing weekend - just in time for the finals of the Bosen Futurity & Derby, the Idaho Falls Futurity, the Intermountain Stallion Stakes and the Von Adams Claiming Stakes for Thoroughbreds. Two additional overnight Stakes were also run - the Idaho Falls Mile and the Coeur D'Alene Casino Stakes. The Bosen Futurity Final -- posting a purse of $54,040 -- was won by Gm Lucky Dasher (trained by Glen Jamison for Gary & Marilyn Moore), while the Bosen Derby with a purse of $15,880 was won by Kellys Glen (trained by Guy Weeks for owner Glen Grunig). Streakin Cherry Cola (trained by Jay Pitcher for Kapp Investment and Kirk Woolf) captured the winner's share of the $27,550 purse in The Idaho Falls Quarter Horse Futurity. The Intermountain Stallion Futurity (purse $12,500) was won by The Black Perry (trained by Jorge Garfias for Apolinar Rodriguez). The Von Adams Memorial Claiming Stakes (purse $11,250) was won by Scott's Poppy (trained & owned by Mike Christian). Finally, the Idaho Falls Mile was won by Temptors Alibi (trained & owned by Gordon Marsh) and the Coeur D'Alene Casino Stakes was won by Corkonian (trained by Gary Simpson for owner Judith Hume). Saturday's ten race card produced the highest handle of the six days of racing -- $46,772.

Overall, the race meet handled a total of $179,335 with an average daily handle of $29,889. Leading jockey and trainer awards were given to William Ives and Mike Scudder, respectively.
